In the Netherlands, households, companies and the catering industry still flush a lot of grease through the sewer. As a result, sewers become clogged, sewage pumping stations get stuck and the purification process is disrupted. Combating grease accumulations in pumping wells, drains and sewers is therefore a serious part of the operational management of municipalities and sewage treatment plants (WWTP) and entails high social costs.
In August 2017, together with TKI Water Technology and a number of partners, we started a scientific study into the effects of microbial breakdown of fats in the sewage system. Literature, lab and pilot research has been used to investigate the effects of the Groene Greeter – or Microcat®-BioPoP – on the functioning of the WWTP. This three-year study has shown that the application of our microbial product has no adverse effects on the composition of wastewater and that the receiving WWTP can continue to function properly.
