Maar, hoe meet je accuraat de chemische waterkwaliteit wanneer er meer dan honderdduizend mogelijke stoffen zijn die in het water kunnen belanden. Bioassays of non-target chemische screening methoden kunnen <em>alle<\/em> stoffen meten, al is het dan niet altijd bekend om precies welke stof het gaat.
