Working together on wastewater

Water boards face numerous challenges that they must anticipate, such as climate change, land subsidence, waterlogging, salinization, heavy rainfall, and prolonged drought, all of which exert significant pressure on the water system. Collaborating to ensure dry feet, clean water, and sufficient water is more important than ever. If water boards were to skip a day of their work, it would immediately lead to problems in low-lying areas of the Netherlands.

Ambitions

The ambition to be completely energy-neutral by 2025 is within reach. There are many opportunities for recovering energy and resources from wastewater. The next step is climate neutrality by 2035. The focus is on minimizing the emissions of nitrous oxide and methane, the emissions of third parties working on behalf of the water board, and reducing greenhouse gases in their environment as much as possible. Water boards are thus raising the bar for sustainability higher than national ambitions and hope to inspire other parties.

Sustainability

There are three focal points to promote sustainability. The first is climate adaptation, involving efforts in dike reinforcement and addressing the consequences of waterlogging and drought. The second is climate mitigation, encompassing energy conservation, the generation of sustainable energy, and the prevention of greenhouse gas emissions. The third is the circular economy, such as reclaiming resources from wastewater.
