Future-Proof Solutions with InfraWater
Water is something we tend to take for granted. It flows from the tap whenever we need it, ready to drink, use for laundry, flushing toilets, or taking a shower. In industry and manufacturing processes, water is often considered a readily available utility. But what happens when water becomes scarce due to challenges in our water infrastructure, making it no longer guaranteed that water will always come out of the tap?
Hanab supports organizations in addressing complex water infrastructure challenges. Together, we ensure that water remains available when and where it is needed. We do this under the name InfraWater.
Everyone is familiar with the challenges facing the electricity grid. Across the Netherlands, significant investments are being made to replace and expand the energy network, which can no longer always accommodate growing peak demand. A similar situation is developing within our water infrastructure, often referred to as water congestion. Existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and industrial wastewater treatment facilities are reaching their limits. Aging assets, emerging types of contaminants, and increasingly stringent regulations make it clear that optimization alone is no longer sufficient—large-scale renewal is required.
Population growth and climate change are placing increasing pressure on the water system. At the same time, the backbone of our water infrastructure consists largely of treatment facilities, weirs, pumping stations, and other installations that are 40 to 50 years old. These assets were designed for a different climate, different standards, and lower demand levels. Incremental improvements are no longer enough; the system requires fundamental modernization. These are exactly the kinds of projects in which InfraWater is eager to contribute and make a difference.
With decades of experience, technical expertise, and knowledge gained through projects across Hanab’s various business units, Hanab InfraWater is the partner of choice for all your water-related challenges.
Collaboration at Every Level
InfraWater builds on Hanab’s extensive experience in delivering complex, socially critical infrastructure projects. Through its work in areas such as the energy transition, Hanab has demonstrated how large-scale assets can be designed, constructed, managed, and maintained safely, reliably, and in a future-proof manner. This knowledge and methodology are directly applicable to the water challenges facing the Netherlands today.
Within this context, Hanab has delivered a variety of water infrastructure projects, including cooling water and drinking water pipelines for Google data centers, where continuity and availability are mission-critical requirements. Another example is the Biesbosch Pipeline, an underground pipeline system of approximately ten kilometers between Roosendaal and Wouw that transports fresh water from the Biesbosch region to Zeeland. Since seawater desalination is highly energy-intensive, transporting fresh water is a more efficient and sustainable solution. This is achieved through pipelines with a diameter of approximately 1.2 meters.
Projects of this nature require more than technical execution alone. They demand integrated management of design, environmental considerations, permitting processes, stakeholder engagement, and risk management. For many years, Hanab has fulfilled the role of managing contractor: a single integrated point of contact that oversees complexity and coordinates collaboration throughout the supply chain.
This role extends across the entire asset lifecycle. InfraWater explicitly connects design and construction with operations, maintenance, renovation, and renewal. By integrating maintenance strategies, inspections, and data-driven asset management from the earliest project stages, installations are not only built but also kept sustainably available throughout their operational life. In this way, infrastructure is prepared for a future in which water, energy, and climate challenges become increasingly interconnected.
Clean Water for Everyone
Over the coming years, InfraWater will focus on water treatment and water safety. Our activities range from treating drinking water and wastewater for consumers and industry to installing, replacing, and upgrading pipelines, weirs, locks, and pumping stations. From engineering and project delivery to maintenance and lifecycle management, all our services are brought together under the recognizable InfraWater brand.
Anyone seeking advice or solutions in the field of water can turn to us. Our primary clients currently include drinking water companies and regional water authorities. However, contractors and industrial facilities requiring wastewater treatment solutions are equally welcome.
We develop sustainable, future-proof solutions that ensure one simple outcome: reliable, clean water today and for generations to come.
