Heemraadsplein sewage pumping station
Together with Kwakernaak, we are renovating the Heemraadsplein sewage pumping station (G0003) in Rotterdam. This pumping station, which is over a century old, is located in a protected urban landscape and plays a vital role in the city’s water management. Commissioned by the City of Rotterdam, we are preparing the pumping station for the future. Within the construction team, we are further developing the design, after which construction will begin. During the work, we will provide a temporary pumping system to ensure that water continues to be discharged. We will then replace the existing system with a new pumping system, including associated piping, controls, and electrical systems. In addition, we are repairing the concrete basin, installing new pressure pipes, and redesigning the outdoor area. We are also coordinating the work of all parties involved. With this project, we are combining modern technology with respect for the historic surroundings and contributing to a reliable and future-proof water system.

Gouda floodgate
Commissioned by the Rijnland Water Authority, Aannemingsbedrijf G. van der Ven is renovating the monumental Keersluis lock. This project will make the lock future-proof and bring it into line with current water safety requirements, while retaining its historic appearance from 1931. Work will start in February 2026 and will take approximately one and a half years to complete. Van der Ven will repair concrete and natural stone structures within a watertight construction pit, replace the lock gates, and renew the fencing and railings. By working in phases, the pumping station will remain operational during the renovation. This is a project that combines water safety, craftsmanship, and careful handling of historical heritage.

Cooling water pump building CCS project Porthos
Van der Ven is working on the construction of the cooling water pump building, an essential part of the project that provides cooling for the compressor station, on behalf of Porthos. The Porthos project, carried out by the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Gasunie and EBN, focuses on transporting and storing CO2 from the Port of Rotterdam in empty gas fields under the North Sea. This offers companies the opportunity to reduce their CO2 emissions and contributes to the climate objectives of the Netherlands and the energy transition. The cooling water pump building is part of the compressor station, where CO2 is pressurised and cooled with water to regulate the temperature during transport to the platform. Van der Ven is working on the design and construction of the building and the associated installations. This project is challenging, with a combination of maritime, concrete construction, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering disciplines on a relatively small construction site.

Climate-robust stream valley Sint-Oedenrode
Contractors Van der Ven – Martens en Van Oord are working on the redevelopment of the winter bed and river bed of the Dommel in Sint-Oedenrode on behalf of the De Dommel Water Board. This project will increase the water storage capacity, reducing flood risks and making the area more climate-proof. The work includes widening the winter bed to 25 metres, adapting five bridges, sewerage works, the construction of recreational facilities and an ecological connection zone. Implementation will start in mid-June and completion is planned for the summer of 2025. This project builds on the successful collaboration between Van der Ven and Martens en Van Oord.

Weir, fish lift and debris removal point Opwettense Watermill
Commissioned by the De Dommel Water Board, Van der Ven has successfully completed the renovation of the Opwetten watermill. The existing weir has been replaced by a modern sluice gate, which improves water drainage and water safety. In addition, a fish lift and a debris removal point have been installed, thereby enhancing the ecology and maintenance of the water system. This project has made the regional water system future-proof, with a focus on safety, ecology, and reliability.

Innamepompstation Bergsche Maas
Van der Ven started construction on the pumping station in March 2019. More than 2 years later, the project has been fully completed with a great result. With a maximum capacity of 24 mᶾ per second, this is the largest raw water intake pump station in the Netherlands. A project full of challenges The many disciplines, the technical and logistical challenges, the unique phasing and the special but difficult-to-reach location made it a project full of challenges. The project involves a combination of hydraulic engineering work, foundation work, concrete work, construction work, mechanical and electrical installations, and site design. Two parts are one! The phasing of construction was unique. It appears to be one building, but it is built in two parts. The deep cellar was built separately from the adjacent building. This allows settlement differences between the 2 building parts to occur independently. After both parts were ready, the 2 parts were poured together into 1 whole. This construction method also contributed to the fact that we could start finishing in the 'lower part', while the concrete work in the basement was not yet ready. In addition to preventing cracks due to settlement, we have also been able to shorten the lead time. Ready for the future Climate change and the varying water quality in the Maas (river) made this an important project. The new intake pump station has a maximum capacity of up to 24 m3 per second and can fill an Olympic swimming pool in less than two minutes. With this intake pump station, Evides can take in more water for their reservoirs even faster and take in water from the Meuse when it is at its best. The new intake station is therefore ready for the future and can continue to guarantee reliable drinking water for the vast majority of the south-west of the Netherlands.

Outflow construction Sint Jansbeek Arnhem
Keeping the Netherlands safe and dry. That is the goal of the national High Water Protection Program, in which more than 1,500 kilometers of dikes are reinforced. One of those dikes is the Rijnkade in Arnhem. This dike reinforcement is in the hands of construction consortium SAMEN, a collaboration between Van der Ven, Ballast Nedam and Hakkers. Commissioned by the Rijn en IJssel Water Board and the municipality of Arnhem, we are ensuring that the Rijnkade will last another 100 years. The dike reinforcement is in full swing. Sint Jansbeek outflow basin The Sint Jansbeek, which flows through the city center and flows into the Rhine, is undergoing a special transformation. Last week, the future outflow basin of the Sint Jansbeek was successfully placed in the quay! We used the fully electric crane pontoon (IBIS) for this. The basin is 5.28 meters long, weighs 29 tons and was produced in Germany. At the moment, the water is still being pumped into the Rhine via a pressure pipe. But by 2025, the basin will be connected to the stream, allowing the water to flow into the Rhine via the new gutter and outflow basin. When everything is ready, you will be able to walk over the new gutter, both on the high and low quay, thanks to steel grids. And thanks to a glass plate in the basin, you can even take a look inside the outflow basin! The outflow basin will resemble an old lock, with two wooden guard doors that can be closed during high water in the Rhine to protect the city from flooding.
Flush water recovery units Loosbroek and Tilburg
G. Van der Ven B.V. Aannemingsbedrijf has realised rinse water recovery units (STUs) on behalf of Brabant Water at the production locations in Tilburg and Loosbroek. These units purify and reuse rinse water, which means that valuable groundwater is used more efficiently for drinking water production, in line with the Delta Plan for Water Conservation. The project included the construction of rinse water processing buildings with cellars, superstructure, installations, solar panels and a sludge line, as well as the site layout. The installations became operational in May 2023 and the project was successfully completed in August 2023.

Westwaard sewage pumping station
Van der Ven is constructing the new Westwaard sewage pumping station in Kaatsheuvel on behalf of the Brabantse Delta Water Authority and the municipality of Loon op Zand. The pumping station will replace the existing installation and provide sufficient capacity for current and future housing developments. In addition, the pumping station will enable the disconnection of rainwater, allowing it to infiltrate locally and making the water system more climate-proof.

Expansion of Sludge Line Eindhoven
Commissioned by Waterschap De Dommel, Van der Ven successfully modified and expanded the sludge line at RWZI Eindhoven. This project, with a duration of 15 months, has now been completed. The work includes the addition of a third sludge thickener, the installation of a new pumping station, the construction of piping and mechanical modifications. Thanks to this capacity increase, RWZI Eindhoven is now better prepared for the increasing demand and the installation can be used more efficiently and sustainably.

Van der Ven has constructed four fish passages on behalf of the Brabantse Delta Water Board, three in Woensdrecht and one in Tilburg, to make weirs passable for fish and to promote fish migration. The project will be completed at the end of 2024. In Woensdrecht, fish lifts have been installed, allowing fish to swim up via a tank with various chambers and pass the weir. In Tilburg, a fish lock has been constructed at the weir on the Dalemdreef in the Dongevallei, which enables fish migration by means of a pipe connection with valves. These fish passages contribute to improving water quality and promote free fish migration in the region.

Renovation and expansion awzi Nieuwe Wetering
Commissioned by the Rijnland Water Authority, the Van der Ven – RWB combination completed the renovation and expansion of the Nieuwe Wetering wastewater treatment plant (AWZI). The capacity of the treatment plant has been increased by more than 40%, which was necessary to be able to process the increase in waste flows in the future. The expansion includes the construction of an anaerobic tank, new site pipes, a new reception work and a second secondary settling tank, which means that the treatment capacity is now 1150 m³ per hour. In addition, the existing installation has been renovated both mechanically and electrically, so that the AWZI can continue to function for the next 15 years without major maintenance. The project has now been successfully completed and the treatment plant is ready for the future.
