The ambitions of the water sector are high. For example, we strive for energy neutrality
in 2025 and circular working in 2050. But that will not happen automatically. In addition, water allows
difficult to steer, as the summer of 2021 unfortunately also proved. To keep the water in good condition
fortunately we have jobs in the Netherlands and to keep them at a certain level
intake and thrust. This concerns about 10,000 objects, a large part of which are still in existence
is not automated. Because these are also ‘unfortunately’ often hidden in the polder
and nothing is as unpredictable as the weather in the Netherlands, it remains human work
to open and close the inlets and weirs depending on the rainfall. Not only
a very time-consuming job, where people are constantly on the move, but moreover
polder pumping stations that are switched on consume an enormous amount of electricity. That while it is precisely the
the intention was to combat CO2 emissions and energy waste in the coming years.
