Het Wijchense Modderkolk levert al meer dan 100 jaar landelijk, maar vooral regionaal een aanzienlijke bijdrage aan het vooruithelpen van het water, de industrie en de zorg. Het bedrijf heeft ook een interne bedrijfsschool en schenkt veel aandacht aan het mogelijk maken van regionale, culturele en sportieve initiatieven. Bovendien bevordert Modderkolk de technische groei en bloei in de regio met hun innovatieve omgeving Technoforum. Al deze regionale inspanningen leverde Modderkolk op 4 oktober 2024 de 23e Parel-award op.       The Weerselo production site has a capacity of one million cubic meters per year and was built in 1966 and expanded in 1977. Renovation is necessary to reduce the risk of failure and the risk of bacterial contamination of the clean water in the future. The installation is equipped with a softening system that reduces the hard water from 15.2 dH to 7.3 dH. RWB (WTB), in combination with H. van Haarst (Civiel) and Moekotte (E+PA), has received the order for the construction work. The work broadly includes: - A new purification plant including a softening plant with a capacity of 300 m3/hour - A renewed clean water pump installation - A new rinse water treatment installation - Completely new electrical and process automation installation - Adapted front area clean water cellar - Custom extraction well housing - Optimization in the context of area protection and species protection at this location

      Water board Vechtstromen and the technology company New Current conducted a pilot with data-driven maintenance at the Hengelo wastewater treatment plant. For the pilot, the water authority selected eight critical components of the wastewater treatment plant, including aerators and pumps. To make the test especially challenging, the authority skipped maintenance on one sludge pump. Although everything initially seemed to function well, New Current's system detected and alerted about increasing wear in time. A few weeks later, the pump did indeed fail. The test demonstrated that predictive maintenance is feasible—not too early, not too late, and not unnecessary. In this case, New Current's system could have prevented 52 hours of downtime. Following the successful pilot project, Vechtstromen decided to implement the technology in other parts of its wastewater treatment plants. The system has already been used to make new predictions.

      Pharmaceutical residues, including antibiotics and antidepressants, are increasingly being released into the sewer network. Removing all traces of these substances proves to be a challenging task. Many pharmaceuticals are in low concentrations and are resistant to degradation through conventional treatment methods used in most wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, these compounds stay in the effluent streams and accumulate in the aquatic environment. In collaboration with various partners, including hospitals, water boards and technology providers, Wageningen Food and Biobased Research has initiated research to develop decentralised solutions to monitor and treat wastewater at the source point of emission of pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance. Tania Mubita Zambrano, a researcher specialized in water purification and project lead, explains, "Initially, we are conducting a comprehensive analysis of the chemical and microbiological components present in the wastewater and evaluating various water treatment technologies to remove these substances." This endeavor does not operate in isolation, as Zambrano emphasizes, "Numerous cutting-edge technologies already exist in this field, but a single technology isn't sufficient. Our research involves collaboration with multiple stakeholders to facilitate the integration of various technologies in a single treatment process to improve efficiency and energy effectiveness. This approach not only targets the removal of pharmaceuticals but also addresses the critical issue of antibiotic resistance in water purification.”
