Successful pilot in the municipality of Amersfoort with biological fat breakdown continued.

“The extra cleaning is no longer necessary. In addition, cleaning, which we still have to do as standard, is also much easier, because the fat that remains is much softer. In principle, you could spray it away with a garden hose.”

Where no grease deposits occur in one sewer, pumping station or grease trap, the other must be cleaned weekly. Every system is different – something that Macero, specialist in sustainable and biological wastewater management, can confirm. Their full-service provision therefore includes a no-obligation trial period. A pilot, as they call it. During this pilot, which lasts a year, the Groene Vetvreter is put to work at a problem location, so that recurring blockages and nuisance caused by grease are resolved and new bottlenecks are prevented. Something that the municipality of Amersfoort can confirm after completing such a pilot.

Han Lensink, Water and Sewerage consultant at the municipality of Amersfoort, heard about the success stories at fellow municipality Soest and thus came to Macero’s trail. André Goedhart, team leader at ROVA, was also curious and agreed to the pilot. “In June 2021, we looked at the locations together with Macero and a plan was drawn up for treating the fat problems,” Lensink explains.

Stubborn problems
The plan was approved and the pilot at two locations, where the problems were serious, was started in August 2021. “The first location is in the historic city centre, in a mixed system with a sinker and a sewage overflow. This sinker was checked every Friday to prevent it from closing with grease during the weekend and overflowing. In the past, if too much fat was found, it was sucked out, which happened almost every week,” says Lensink.
